Lentil Burger and Sac Bee article

The other day I had some leftover lentils that I mixed with bread crumbs and BBQ sauce to make my own veggie burgers. Today I found an article that The Bee reprinted from NY Times talking about how difficult and expensive it is to be vegan, about how none of the substitutions are as cheap or tasty as meat and milk products. Of course being vegan is going to be boring and expensive if you're living off prepackaged veggie burgers and soy lattes. I've been vegan for well over a year and vegetarian since the age of twenty-one and with the exception of soy milk I hardly ever eat mock meats or fake animal products. I get most of my protein from beans, lentils and other whole foods which are always cheaper and often more nutrient dense than meat products. Someone commented that they would never be vegan because they have a soy allergy. I wanted to respond by asking if she had any idea how much soy is in regular food. Several nonvegan convenience food contain soy and it's one of the primary foods given to livestock animals.
