Protein

Since I haven't been blogging much about my food, I thought I'd give some basic vegan info. This entry: Protein. Everyone wonders where veggies get protein, seems to be the only nutrient people are concerned about.According to Wikipedia, most adults need about 50 grams of protein per day. So I looked through my grandma's kitchen to check labels on random foods. Here's the amount of protein per serving on them.

Plain Bagel 9 grams

Special K cereal, no milk 6 grams

Peanut Butter 7 grams

French Bread 5 grams

Dry Lentils 10 grams

Minute Rice 5 grams

Walnuts 4 grams

Canned White Beans 7 grams

Canned Lentil Soup 8 grams

Macaroni Noodles 7 grams

Instant Potatoes 2 grams

Spaghetti Sauce 2 grams

Canned Chickpeas/Garbonzo beans 7 grams

To my knowlege all of these foods are vegan and came from a well known grocery store not overpriced healthfood stores. Also most people eat more than a serving size of these foods in a meal and therefore get more protein along with the calories.

Some of the best plant sources of protein are beans, lentils, tofu and other forms of soy, quinoa, nuts and seeds. I am not including fake meats and fake cheeses because they tend to be more heavily processed and should be eaten in moderation.
